Virginia Tech

2014-2015 Transfer Guide

Transfer Requirementsstudents in lab

The University minimum high school requirements to be considered for admission are below. Although the admissions committee considers applicants with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale), most competitive applicants will present a GPA of 3.0 or better. In majors where applications exceed available space, such as architecture, business, communication, computer science, industrial design, and engineering, the competitive GPA may be even higher. Preference will be given to students whose college coursework includes Freshman English, Mathematics (as required by the specific major) and Science (as required by the specific major).

Minimum High School Requirements

Whether or not you have a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate, you still must meet minimum requirements for admission and must present academic records that are competitive with those of other applicants. All transfer applicants, including those who have completed an associate's degree, must have completed the following minimum requirements:

Foreign Language Requirement

By the time students graduate from the university, a language study requirement must be met.

Foreign Language
For most majors the minimum requirement may be met in high school by completing 2 units of a single foreign or classical language (3 units for those students who will graduate from certain majors within Virginia Tech’s College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences and College of Science).

The requirement also may be met after admission by one of the following:

  1. Earning 6 semester hours of college-level foreign or classical language credit. Such credits are in addition to those normally required for graduation in a student's program of study.
  2. Receiving credit by examination for a foreign or classical language.

Choice of Major

Transfer applicants must select a specific major. Transfers may not enter University Studies (US).

  1. A completed application for admission.
  2. A $60 non-refundable application fee; check or money order payable to Treasurer, Virginia Tech ($70 for international applications).
  3. A typed or written statement outlining all academic and work experience since graduation from high school and reasons why you wish to transfer to Virginia Tech.
  4. Transcripts from every college or university attended. If you are currently enrolled, you should submit an official transcript from your current institution after completion of at least one semester, plus official transcripts from every previous college. If you are not currently enrolled, please note that fact on the application form under "College Info" and submit an official transcript from every previous college. All transcripts must be issued by the institution in sealed envelopes and delivered to Virginia Tech with the seal unbroken.
  5. Applicants should have completed at least one full semester of college work prior to submitting an application for admission.
  6. A list of current courses, if currently enrolled.
  7. An official copy of final high school transcript.
