You are considered to be a transfer applicant if you have attempted 12 or more credit hours at another college or university any time following graduation from high school.

Course Recommendations by Major

This site contains course recommendations for each undergraduate degree program at Virginia Tech. The lists are alphabetical by major and include recommendations for study during the first year or two years preceding transfer. Virginia Tech course numbers are listed in the column on the right with Virginia community college equivalents on the left.

Virginia Tech has a new approach to General Education – Pathways: General Education at Virginia Tech. There will be a transition from the former Curriculum for Liberal Education to the new Pathways. The purpose for the following information is to help students determine under which plan they fall.

Students will fall under Pathways: General Education with either of the following circumstances:

  • Freshmen1 who begin at Virginia Tech in the fall 2018 or subsequent.
  • Transfer2 students who begin at Virginia Tech fall 2020 or subsequent.
  • Students will fall under Curriculum for Liberal Education with either of the following circumstances:

  • Freshmen1 who begin at Virginia Tech summer 2018 or prior.
  • Transfer2 students who begin at Virginia Tech summer 2020 or prior.
  • 1Freshmen are defined as students completing 11 credit hours or fewer after high school graduation.
    2Transfers are defined as students completing 12 credit hours or more after high school graduation.

    Unless otherwise noted, the Foreign Language Requirement policy applies to all majors.

    Prospective transfer students who are not attending Virginia community colleges may use this guide in the following way:

    • Look up your intended VT major and make a list of the VT course numbers we recommend.
    • Look up the course descriptions listed by department in the Undergraduate Course Catalog.
    • Match those descriptions with course descriptions in the course catalog of your institution, to identify appropriate equivalents.
    • Verify the list with the transfer advisor in your intended college/department at Virginia Tech.
